Meet Travis Orlando, you’re next American Idol! Well maybe not, but you just never know. Orlando was the very last auditoner to sing for the Idol judges during last night’s New Jersey auditions. The 16 year old did a rendition of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” which impressed judge Steven Tyler so much, that he asked for another song. The Bronx native then sang Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours,” which prompted the much desired “you’re going to hollywood” moment. Not everything was as pleasent as his audition though. We the viewers had a chance to hear Orlando’s backstory, complete with a tour of his rough Bronx neighborhood (near the Grand Concourse). “You have robberies, you have killings — anything you can possibly imagine goes on here,” Orlando said. The teen also mentioned living in homeless shelters for a few years, due to the recession. Despite all the hard times, Orlando credits his twin brother Timmy for supporting him, telling him to keep his head up and believe in his talent. By the end of the segment most of America was in tears (including me) with Orlanda saying he wanted to “prove to other people that anyone can do this.” Travis for the win!!
