This weekend, the House of Representatives passed a measure that would cut more than $37 million in federal funding for programs that help Big Brothers Big Sisters match adult mentors with children facing adversity. Which will jeopardize the future of 52,000 children currently benefiting from these programs and also hurt the tens of thousands of children waiting to be matched. Numerous studies have shown that children enrolled in the BBBS program are more likely to avoid risky behaviors, delinquency and the juvenile justice system; have higher aspirations and improved self confidence; and are more likely to stay in school, perform better academically, and graduate.
