Katy Perry has released the video for the Dr. Luke produced track Wide Awake, the eighth single off her multiplatinum sophomore album, Teenage Dream. The Lance Drake and Tony T. Datis directed video pays homage to Alice in Wonderland and features Katy Perry running through a magical, stunning yet self destructing maze, a maze which Katy Perry says is symbolic to how crazy her life has been these past couple of years.
“I just wanted to tell a story about myself kind of going through this journey, maybe sometimes trying to get out of the maze,” she told MTV. “There’s good parts, there’s bad parts, and the whole time there’s the younger version of me leading me through. It’s kind of like the labyrinth of my life in the last two years.”
If there’s one thing I can say about Katy Perry is that what she may lack in quality with her (mostly) bubble gum teenage fluff tunes, she more than makes up with her creative and well executed music videos. As if that wasn’t enough, she keeps breaking records with every single she releases. When was the last time an artist released eight (hit) singles off one album? Props to her. With that being said, though I don’t think that the video is bad in any way shape or form, it is definitely my least favorite out of the eight she’s shot for this album. Nonetheless, given the ridiculous amount of success her last seven singles have achieved, I have no doubt that this one will follow suit.
