Earlier this week Lady Gaga stopped by LA’s 97.1 AMP Radio Station to discuss her newest single ‘Applause,’ her forthcoming album ARTPOP, and this year’s VMAs.
While the Popstar had much to chat about with Carson Daly on the music frontier, it was a revelation outside of the Lady Gaga persona that struck accord with me during the interview.
Following an injury that consequently broke the singer’s hip, Gaga explains that she found renewal in her life while out of the limelight. Partnering with Marina Abramovic for a fundraising Kickstarter project, Gaga underwent extreme lengths of rehab (being left blindfolded and completely nude in the woods) in order to strengthen her sense of self and her artistry. In the interview she says:
She [Marina Abramovic] really saved my life. I felt polluted for a while by fame. In my time spent with her, she spent cleaning my spirit. [Now] I feel less high, literally. She sobered me up a lot. I stayed very committed to her as a student and I found that discipline and that sense of ambition that I’ve had inside of me since I was very young.
Whatever opinions you may have of her music and her over the top image, her self-renewal journey is one to applaud (no pun intended).
Lady Gaga also revealed that her experiences from her last Monster’s Ball tour, to her injury, and the recording of ARTPOP have all be documented for a Fall feature film release.
