20 years ago on this date, Brandy made her official entertainment industry debut on the ABC sitcom Thea. The following year, Brandy went on to release her self-titled debut album selling over six million copies worldwide. In 1996, she starred in her own sitcom Moesha, which became the most-watched show on the UPN network. In 1997, Whitney Houston hand-picked Brandy to star in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s television version of Cinderella. The special was watched by an estimated 60 million viewers, giving the network its highest ratings in the time period in 16 years. Her sophomore album, Never Say Never sold over sixteen million copies worldwide and garnered her a Grammy Award.
We can go on and on about her successes during the span of her 20 years in the entertainment industry; but to put it mildly, Brandy has broken barriers and opened doors for a slew of entertainers. I think Jennifer Hudson said it best, “(Brandy) is a treasure that can’t be duplicated. I think we have all tried!” And in her 20th year, Brandy is proving that the best is yet to come.
